““Your network is your net worth.””
Connections can open countless doors for your business, but it isn’t just about the number of people you know, it’s the quality of your connections that can have the greatest impact on your business.
Local networking is a powerful way to make real, authentic connections in your area with others in your profession, expanding brand visibility and growing a loyal client base.
In this blog post, I’ll share four tips for effectively networking within your local community, plus examples of local organizations I’ve partnered with personally.
Whether you’re a small business owner, entrepreneur, or professional, networking with your community can lead to impactful relationship building and tremendous business growth.
4 Ways to Network on a Local Level
Attend Local Events
Local events and mixers are a fantastic way to connect with a diverse range of people who could potentially become clients or partners. These events usually take place at a local or regional venue such as a community center or small business hub and have a relaxed, friendly atmosphere where people can make genuine connections and feel a sense of belonging.
In addition to meeting future clients, people at these events have the potential to become a valuable support network for your business, offering advice, referrals, and encouragement.
Example: As we speak, I’m currently attending the Maine Women’s Conference in Portland, Maine. This nonprofit organization has a 100% volunteer Board with a BIG big vision for the future to draw local Maine women together to connect, educate, inspire, and empower one another to assume new and expanded roles in the workforce and communities! I love being a part of an organization that is committed to creating an inclusive environment of diverse individuals, organizations and communities.
2. Join Community Organizations
Another strategy for expanding your local network is to actively participate in community organizations such as chambers of commerce, rotary clubs, churches, synagogues, gyms, or business associations. By getting involved, you can become advocates and ambassadors, connecting with others in your community on many different levels.
This isn’t about adding yet another thing to your busy calendar — these organizations provide a way to become an integral part of your local network.
Example: Women’s Business League, for example, is a community organization where powerhouse women of all backgrounds can connect, grow and prosper by sharing resources and promoting their businesses. With chapters all over the country and virtual ones as well, the core of WBL is its mission of kindness and community.
3. Volunteer for a Cause You’re Passionate About
Volunteering for a cause that’s near and dear to your heart not only makes a positive impact on your community, it also allows you to meet like-minded individuals who share those passions.
When you volunteer with a local charity or community project, you become part of a tight network motivated by the same cause. Joining forces with others who share your passion creates a strong foundation for business relationships.
As a bonus, volunteering can also allow you to share your skills outside of the typical business realm, getting more eyes on your work and helping you become a recognizable face to the broader community. This visibility equals more connections with potential clients and more opportunities to collaborate.
Example: I’ve been volunteering with Maine Needs for the last 2 years — an incredible grassroots community effort powered by a collective of volunteers who strive to help families in Maine meet their basic needs. Maine Needs focuses on helping those who are starting life over from scratch : domestic abuse survivors, asylum seekers and those facing financial hardships, providing donated clothing, hygiene products, household items, and other necessities
4. Host Workshops or Seminars
Become a leader in your community by taking an active role and hosting an event yourself! Organizing workshops or seminars related to your industry is a great way to position yourself as an expert in your field. It builds credibility and fosters a sense of trust, helping you establish a loyal following who look to you for guidance. This is key to attracting clients from the local or regional pool of potential customers.
Example: The Brand Breakthrough Mastermind Retreat.
Picture a coastal haven in Maine, buzzing with the energy of 20 ambitious women entrepreneurs who have gathered for an unforgettable weekend of creativity, connection, and of course, brand building! This retreat was a long-time dream of mine and a true labor of love. While all of the attendees were not local, I had the pleasure of hosting it right here in my home state of Maine.
The retreat included networking, engaging activities, professional headshots, brunch, and a cozy happy hour in my home. But more than just creating beautiful memories, this event fostered lasting bonds and friendships. We left feeling supported, motivated, and grateful for this empowering experience.
Emerging from behind your computer screen and getting involved in your local community can feel unnatural at first, especially if you’re a home-based business owner or solopreneur. But I want to encourage you to step outside your comfort zone and get involved in local events and organizations!
Networking locally can be a complete game-changer for your business — creating a strong presence within your community and establishing valuable connections.
Remember that genuine relationships and a commitment to your community are key to successful networking and long-term business growth!
