Many entrepreneurs try to speak to everyone because they think casting a wide net will bring in more business.
It feels safer. If your message is broad enough, surely more people will relate… right?
But here’s the reality most business owners eventually discover:
When your brand tries to be for everyone, it ends up feeling memorable to no one.
In today’s crowded online world, people aren’t looking for someone who does a little bit of everything. They’re looking for the person who clearly owns their lane.
Trying to be a “Jane-of-all-trades” doesn’t position you as versatile—it often dilutes your message and confuses your audience.
And confusion rarely leads to bookings.
People remember specialists, not generalists.
When you drop the generic brand vibe and focus on a clear niche, something powerful happens. You begin attracting the clients who are actively searching for what you offer—and you start building authority in your space.
So how do you move from general and generic to niched and specific?
Start by identifying your ideal audience and tailoring your messaging and offers to speak directly to them.
When your brand clearly reflects who you serve and how you help them, everything becomes easier—your marketing, your messaging, and even your sales conversations.
Focusing on a specific audience allows you to:
Instead of spreading your energy thin, you begin speaking directly to the people who are already looking for what you do.
In other words—you stop chasing clients and start drawing the right ones in.

If niching down feels overwhelming, you’re not alone. Many entrepreneurs worry that choosing a niche will limit their opportunities.
In reality, it does the opposite.
Here are a few ways to start clarifying yours:
1) Reflect on your passions and expertise: What topics light you up?
What problems do people consistently come to you for help with?
Your niche should sit at the intersection of what you’re great at and what you enjoy. That alignment is what makes your brand sustainable long term.
2) Research your target audience: Who is your target market and what are their specific needs, challenges, and preferences?
To uncover their pain points and desires, hang out where they are online, listen to what they are saying, and ask clarifying questions.
3) Analyze your competition: Take a look at others in your industry. Where are the gaps in the market? What needs are not being met? Where is there room for a unique perspective?
Determine how you can offer a unique value proposition that sets you apart from others in your industry.
4) Stay true to yourself: While it’s important to adapt to the needs of your target market, it’s equally important to stay true to your brand values and identity.
Choose a niche that aligns with your heart and mission so you can be as authentic as possible. The strongest brands are built where authenticity and expertise intersect.
