If you want to build a business that makes an impact, your brand needs more than a clever tag line and pretty logo — it needs depth and soul.
We must learn to answer the question WHY does our brand exist in the first place? What values and principles do you stand for?
In our last blog post, we kicked off the Ready Set Brand Blog Series by exploring the essence of branding and why it matters. This week, we are going to dive deeper into the heart of your brand—the brand mission.
If you want to create an engaged and loyal following, your brand mission statement is the key. A strong brand mission helps you connect deeply with your audience by sharing what you believe in, acting as the heartbeat of your business and keeping you on track even when faced with challenges.
Your Brand Mission defines the real reason you’re in business. It’s your big fat, juicy WHY! Knowing this “WHY” is so important because it brings fulfillment to your work and guides your decision-making process.
Defining your mission is how people build a deep connection with you — they see your passion, excitement, emotion, story and drive and are inspired to work with you. It’s about the change, the movement, and the impact you want to deliver to your audience.
Writing a Brand Mission Statement is a great way to declare your mission and share the details of your purpose and the intention behind your business. This statement encapsulates who you are, what you value, and why you’re passionate about your work.
Step one of writing your Brand Mission Statement is to define your WHY. This step requires time, reflection, and introspection. It’s a process that evolves over time and is deeply personal. This work doesn’t happen overnight — powerful brands take effort, energy and patience.
To begin to uncover your why, ask yourself key questions:
1. What do you want to help people with?
2. What do you want to change or fix in the industry/world?
3. What are you tired of seeing and hearing?
4. What do you believe to be true and are ready to stand up for?
5. How do you want people to feel?
6. What is missing in the marketplace?
By asking yourself these questions and being honest about what you uncover, you’ll discover the essence of your brand mission and see what truly motivates and inspires you. Once your WHY is clear, it’s time to create your Mission Statement.
Here are a couple of real-world examples for inspiration!
Starbucks: To inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time.
Mallika Malhotra, The Brand CEO, is on a mission to help female entrepreneurs unlock their strengths, step into their power, and define success on their terms.
Birch House Candles: We are on a mission to help busy women take a moment, breathe deeply and inhale the moment you’re in.
Once you’ve defined your brand mission, it’s time to put it into action. Here are some practical steps to infuse your mission into your brand:
1. Include your mission statement on your website homepage: Make it prominent, so visitors immediately understand the purpose behind your business.
2. Record a video on social media: Share your mission and the movement you hope to create. Connect with your audience authentically and let them feel your passion.
3. Integrate your mission statement into your elevator pitch or business bio: Use every opportunity to communicate your mission, whether in networking events or online profiles.
4. Seek out aligned partners: Collaborate with individuals or organizations who share your sense of purpose. Together, you can amplify your impact and create a ripple effect!
Having a brand mission adds authenticity and humanity to your business. It establishes a common ground to connect with your ideal customers. When you embrace your WHY, communicate it passionately, and let it guide your actions, your brand story will unfold with purpose and passion and your audience will sit up and take notice.
