No matter how ah-mazing you are in your business, you cannot be everything to everyone.
Being a jack-of-all-trades can lead to utter exhaustion. Many people think this approach is the way to snag all the clients, but the truth is, it can actually be counterproductive. When you’re not focused on offering specialized services or products, your ideal client can easily become frustrated because they don’t clearly understand what you do. As we know all too well, a confused mind never buys.
If your business plan is to do it all, it’s time to give up the gig!
For starters, I want you to ask yourself these hard questions:
Is my brand boring? Am I too generalized in my focus?
If you just swallowed that hard pill and the answer is yes, I’m here to help. In this post, I’m going to show you how to narrow down your focus to find your specialization. Let’s ditch the bland, unspecific brand and step into your zone of genius!
Why the fuss?
I get that it can be scary to specialize. You don’t want to miss out on opportunities, and you wonder if you will be able to find an audience large enough to fill your client list. But the truth is that when you try to appeal to everyone, you’re really connecting with no one!
On the flip side, when you narrow your focus to a specific niche, you position yourself as an authority in your industry. This strategy helps you stand out among the crowd, especially if you are in a saturated market like coaching, photography, and design.
Instead of offering a junk drawer of services or products, find your unique place in the market and share that message with confidence!
So how do I choose what to be an expert in?
Lean in because I’m going to share with you my three simple steps to specialization. These steps have helped many of my clients narrow their focus and choose their niche once and for all.
1) Take a Magnifying Glass to Your Biz. Get out a journal or open a Google doc and start brain dumping the answers to these key questions. Really think about these questions and be honest with yourself:
What am I known for in my industry?
What do people come to me for help with?
What do I love to do that fills my heart?
What am I doing when I am in my zone of genius?
2) Ask Those You Trust. Gather your family and friends, colleagues, people you network with, and even clients to ask for feedback. Let’s learn the impression your brand is making in your circle, community and marketplace. Ask them:
What would you say I’m known for?
What kind of questions am I able to help you with?
What strengths do you see in me?
Why did you hire me in the first place?
*This second step is critical, because it can bring insight beyond what you can’t see on your own.
3) Develop a Brand Message that is Consistent with Your Speciality. Does the description of you that you discovered in the first two points actually line up with the image you are projecting in your branding and services?
All of your marketing touchpoints need to tell the same story so you actually can build a reputation for your brand. The goal is to be cohesive and consistent. If your message is confusing, it’s time to tweak your message in alignment with how people see you.
Consider this:
Is your elevator pitch clear on what you do best?
Does your bio offer a strong description of your expertise?
Does your website home page work hard to convert viewers into prospects?
Do your brand images communicate leadership in your niche?
Working through these three steps is crucial to creating a brand with a powerful, specific story to tell. No longer will you be stuck in no man’s brand, but instead looked at as the go-to expert in your defined niche.
