“One thing is certain in business: you will make mistakes. When you are pushing the boundaries, mistakes are inevitable. How you react is important.” — Richard Branson
Selecting the perfect niche can be downright paralyzing…
We worry that no one will actually book our services.
We worry about losing customers when we narrow our target market.
We worry that we won’t be able to justify our new prices.
Basically, we worry that we’ll get this entire Niching thing terribly wrong, and we’ll be left in the dust while others scoop up our potential clients!
And I get it… If we go all in with a niche that isn’t profitable or just ends up not being the best fit, we’ll certainly face some frustrations and set backs. But we can’t let fear keep us from taking the steps we need to take to create a specialized business. Niching doesn’t have to be so scary that it stops you from moving forward!
In this blog post, I’m going to share with you 3 common mistakes made when Niching and steps you can take to avoid them as you work to create a power niche for your business.
First things first, let’s define Niche Marketing: It is the process of identifying a specific market segment and targeting your product or service towards that group.
Why is it so important? By turning your focus to that narrower audience, you can increase your visibility and establish yourself as an expert to that smaller audience.
I’m here to help you avoid the common mistakes I see entrepreneurs make when Niching, so you can carve out a niche that will bring you enormous fulfillment and success!
Mistake #1 – Failing to Define Your Niche Clearly
One of the most common mistakes I see entrepreneurs make is that they fail to define their niche market clearly. A niche market is your target audience – a group of people who have similar needs and interests.
Before you can begin to create a niche marketing strategy, you need to define who you’re trying to reach! Without understanding who they are and what they care about, it’s virtually impossible to create an effective marketing campaign.
Entrepreneurial Example: Hims, a men’s health and wellness company, has a crystal clear understanding of their niche market: They target men who are looking for discreet and affordable solutions to sensitive health and wellness issues such as hair loss, skin issues, sexual health and even psychological needs. Their marketing campaigns are tailored towards this specific group, using language and imagery that resonates with their specific audience.
Action Steps You can Take to Create a Clearly Defined Niche Market
Conduct market research to identify your ideal customer
Create buyer personas to represent your target audience
Use your buyer personas to inform your marketing campaigns

Mistake #2 – Being Afraid to Turn Away Customers
There is real, legitimate fear in turning away potential customers. It can feel like you’re leaving money on the table.
When you first started your business, it’s understandable that you probably wanted to cast a wide net to attract as many customers as possible. However, by continuing to do so, your message is diluted, and it makes it extremely difficult for your target audience to identify with you. Don’t let fear keep you from making the important move to narrow your brand’s audience!
Entrepreneurial Example: Patagonia, an outdoor clothing and gear company, bravely turned away customers who didn’t align with their mission. Since the company focuses on sustainability and environmental activism, they made it clear that they weren’t interested in catering to customers who didn’t share those values. By owning their mission and being clear about their values, they established themselves as a leader in sustainable fashion and attracted those customers who were passionate about the same issues.
Key Steps to Creating a Niche Market that Aligns with Your Brand
Define your brand values and mission – this is the heartbeat of your business
Create messaging that reflects your values and mission. People need to connect with the story behind your brand. This creates trust and camaraderie
Don’t be afraid to turn away customers who don’t align with your mission. You can’t be everything to everyone. Focus and being the best leader you can be for your corner of the market and let the rest go
Mistake #3 – Focusing Too Much on Competition
Entrepreneurs are notorious for giving too much thought to their competitors. Of course it’s human nature to compare ourselves to others, but while it’s important to be aware of your competition, obsessing over them can be counterproductive. Focusing too much on what others are doing will cause you to lose sight of your own unique value proposition and miss opportunities to innovate.
Entrepreneurial Example: Tesla, the electric car company, has disrupted the automotive industry by focusing on innovation and technology. They’ve created a niche market that appeals to customers who are interested in sustainable transportation and cutting-edge technology.
While other car companies may be their competitors, Tesla focuses on their own unique value proposition rather than worrying about what their competitors are doing.
Key Action Steps to Stop Obsessing over the Competition and Embrace Your Unique Value
Focus on what you bring to the table that no one else does. What’s your unique value proposition?
Innovate and create solutions that meet the needs of your target audience. Look for common hang ups and frustrations that your target audience faces and find ways to fix them
Be aware of your competition, but don’t let them dictate your strategy
Niching is an essential element and should be treated as one of the most important processes you work through as you build your business.
By avoiding the common Niching mistakes I’ve highlighted in this post, you can establish yourself as the expert in your chosen field, attract customers who are passionate about the same issues as you are, and stand out from the crowd. These attributes are key to running a sustainable, enjoyable business.
