No doubt, the online marketplace is a noisy place.
Many of us in this online entrepreneurial space are offering similar services, programs, products and offerings as others. This means that our marketplace can become overcrowded and noisy. When there are literally hundreds of people competing for the same clients, it’s not easy to capture attention.
With stats like these, you’re probably wondering how on earth you will ever be able to stand out and position your brand to win the attention and hearts of your audience. How can you cut through the noise and make a sizable impact with your brand?
In this post, I am going to share with you a Fool-proof, 3-point Formula for Building a Brand that cuts through the noise and the clutter to impact your audience.
And don’t worry, this formula is NOT about selling and promoting more.
This formula is about connecting on a deeper level with our audience. Following these three steps will help you stand out from the rest by creating a memorable and remarkable brand and telling your story in a compelling and relevant way.
1) Choose passion over popularity. This may seem like counter advice, but I am giving you permission to be polarizing. In this market, we need to stop trying to make everyone like us and start standing strong in our values and purpose instead.
Building an audience isn’t about collecting likes and follows anymore, it’s about putting your stake in the ground when it comes to the things you believe in. You will attract those people who are in alignment with your story and repel the ones that are not when you bravely share your passions freely. Your brand is not for everyone, and that is ok. Let go of the need to be liked and have everyone’s approval and understand that the best brands are those that unashamedly share their convictions.
Example — My client Elizabeth Girouard of Pure Simple Wellness believes in a no-diet, anti-quick-fix approach to health and wellness. Her approach is holistic, and she shares her thoughts and convictions with purpose and passion.
2) Create a laser focused brand. I’ve said it before, and I will keep shouting it from the rooftops as long as it takes : Stop trying to do ALL THE THINGS. Learn to say no to the tasks and clients that are not in your wheelhouse.
Find your bulls eye brand and hone in on your unique expertise, your specific audience, and your simplified, targeted offering. You don’t need to do work that is not in your zone of genius anymore, I’m giving you an out — just say no!
There isn’t a brand in the world that is meant to help everyone on the planet. When you make your target audience small, you increase the potency of your relevance and become more memorable and magnetic. This tactic will help protect your energy, your genius and set boundaries in your business.
Example — look at my client Nicole Kepic. Nicole is a specialist in copywriting for sales pages. Yes, she could be writing all the things for her clients — from blog posts to web copy to newsletters and more, but instead Nicole has made the decision to focus on being the sales page copy expert. This niche helps her target her ideal customers, collaborations, partners, etc even better.
3) Talk less. Listen more. Know your customers and their needs inside and out. Understand their pain points so you can serve them better than anyone else. Stop trying to pressure them with promotion after promotion. Rather, adopt a give, give, get mindset (meaning you give lots of advice and support and THEN you ask for the sale. Rinse and Repeat). This will turn your audience into repeat clients and raving fans like nothing else because they trust you and know you have their best interest at heart.
Example — part of my own customer journey is offering free Brand Power Hour events on Zoom where I teach about brand-building concepts and answer questions. This event allows me to really listen to my client’s struggles with branding and support them in small ways.
When you can put this 3-point formula into play in your own brand, it amplifies your power and makes you memorable, shareable, and referable. You will no longer blend in with the competition, but will build a strong, lasting connection with your audience.
