If your business has evolved but your brand hasn’t caught up, you may be dealing with identity lag. In this post, I share three places an outdated version of your brand may still be showing up—and practical ways to close the gap so your messaging reflects who you are and the work you want to be known for today.
A client came to me recently. She’s a consultant with over a decade of experience, a strong track record, and a clear sense of who she wanted to work with.
But when I looked at her website, I saw someone different.
Her messaging was still leading with the work she’d done five years ago — a scope and services that no longer reflected the true expert she had become.
She hadn’t updated it because she’d been busy.
And honestly? It still felt mostly accurate.
But anyone who landed on her website was meeting the person she was five years ago—NOT the expert she was today.
If you read the last blog post, I shared my own version of being stuck-in-the-past : the domain I held onto for six years after becoming The Brand CEO.
My client’s was an outdated website. Mine was an old URL. Your version might be something else entirely.
But the gap is the same: who you’ve become vs what your brand is still communicating.
I call it identity lag.
Identity lag is the gap between who you’ve become and the story your brand is still telling about you.
That gap can be surprisingly hard to see when it’s your own brand.
Identity lag is almost invisible from the inside because you’ve lived every step of your own evolution, so it all makes sense in your head.
You know who you are and what you do and why it matters, but your audience is only seeing what’s in front of them.
Identity lag almost always shows up in one of three places.
The fix does not require a full rebrand. It just means making sure what people see today reflects the business you’re actually building.
We begin with getting brutally honest about what the current, real version of your brand:
Who are your best-fit clients? What do you want to be known for? What problem do you solve exceptionally well?
Then look at what your audience actually sees—your bio, homepage, offers, and the way you introduce yourself—and ask:
Does this reflect who I am now, or who I used to be?
Anything that reflects the old version gets a deadline because it’s no longer doing the job your brand needs it to do.
When those pieces come into alignment, your message gets clearer and you stop having to work so hard to explain what you do.
Now that you’re asking yourself the right questions, follow these three steps to find where the gap is in your brand right now:
Letting go of the old version of your brand is not about erasing where you’ve been. Every pivot, every reinvention, every season of figuring it out — it all built the foundation for who you are right now.
But your audience doesn’t need the whole story, they need to see the current chapter clearly. And when they can — that’s when they choose you.
