Grab those scissors and glue sticks because it’s time to tap into your creative intuition by creating a vision board to set your 2023 goals into motion!
What is a vision board?
A vision board is a collection of images, words, quotes and symbols attached to a physical board that have special meaning to you and represent your aspirations.
They are a FUN and easy way to gather all of your goals and ideas into one place.
In this blog post, you’ll learn the steps for creating a board that is much more than just a funky piece of art for your office wall — this board can be a catalyst to unleash your BIG dreams! It will be a tangible reminder of what you hope to achieve and source of inspiration if your business experiences setbacks.
Why take the time to create a vision board?
Creating a vision board is a practice of gaining clarity. If you don’t give yourself permission to dream and spend time getting clear on your goals, how will you ever progress in your business?
When you pinpoint what you really desire to achieve in your business, you have a better chance of actually seeing it through. Setting big goals will help you avoid falling into the trap of feeling scattered, lost, chasing shiny objects, or being perpetually “busy”.
Before You Begin
It’s important to start the vision board process in the right mindset. We must not just think about what we want to achieve, we also need to grab a pen and paper and put those dreams down in ink. According to Dave Kohl, people who regularly write down their goals earn nine times as much over their lifetime as people who don’t. You heard me right… NINE times! As you can see, taking the time to set goals and log them in a visual way is meaningful and worth it.
It often takes some pensive prodding to reveal your innermost desires and dreams. Here are some questions and prompts to get you in the right mindset for this exercise:
What have you always wanted to do with your business but never had the courage to do? If fear was not an obstacle, I would be…
If you were given a free 24 hours, what would you work on? My friends, family and fans always say I am a genius at…
If you were given $10,000 today for your business, what would you invest in? If money were not an issue, I would….
What kind of clients do you wish to attract? If I could create the perfect customer, he/she would be…
In 1-3 words, what is the emotion you desire to have about your business? If I could wake up everyday feeling like this….
If you were given a magic wand, what would your brand be doing based on your talents, interests and abilities? If I were my very best self, I would be…
What does your next-level brand look and feel like? Wouldn’t it be amazing if I could create this brand experience…
What does your ideal work day look like? Imagine if my work day looked like this from morning, noon and night…
What does your ideal office look like? Who is on your team? My workspace and dream team for my creative empire looks like….
What other businesses or entrepreneurs do you admire and why? If my business was a mix of my favorite brands, it would look like this…
Let’s Get to Work!
Grab the scissors, glue and a stack of magazines (variety is best — I prefer fashion, food, travel, business and wellness). You’ll also need a nice big desk or open space to work.
Start the process by tearing pages from the magazines when you spot images and words that make you feel something — items that represent not only what you want to happen, but also how you want to feel in those moments. Thinking about how you’ll feel when you achieve your goals is the driving force in this exercise. Don’t overthink it, just tear out what resonates with you and makes you smile!
Once you have a good stack of visuals, start designing your board. Look at the images you picked and start pasting them on. Follow your creative intuition. There’s no wrong way to do this; just fill up the board with your images! Once you get rolling, you’ll find your own rhythm and all the images will surprisingly make sense together. Once the images are all pasted, celebrate! You’ve created a vision board that expresses your mind and heart. Place it in an area you see often.
General Rules to follow for optimal results.
No idea is too big
Be honest
Don’t censor or edit yourself
Don’t copy or worry about what others are creating
No judging
Trust your gut
Have fun!
What happens after I create the board?
After the creation process is complete, take time to look over your board daily. Choose 3-5 top insights, goals or dreams and record them on post-it notes or index cards.
Then, pick one of those ideas — one that excites you, scares you, and motivates you.
Next, write down three small action steps that you can do right now to turn that idea into a reality. (Don’t get overwhelmed with all the things you need to do to accomplish the goal. Instead, focus on starting small so you can build momentum and confidence!)
Once you complete the first three tasks, write the next three tasks, and continue to do this to get closer to accomplishing your big goal!
Bonus Exercise:
Craft your elevator pitch as if you’ve ALREADY achieved your big business goal. Introduce yourself as your future self. Practice saying this out loud in front of a mirror or with your closest business besties. It feels very uncomfortable, but this declaration can often be the catalyst to getting closer to your dreams! I’m a big believer that if we share our big goals out loud and in public, things happen sooner than we think.
Great brands take the lead and design their own future, and a vision board is a tangible way to start that process. It may seem like a small thing, but taking the time to create a vision board can really set the stage for the direction of your business in the coming year.
Don’t stop with the vision board — let’s continue to work on our big dreams together!
